New Bob Bates game "Thaumistry: In Charm's Way" is on Kickstarter

There's not been a new text adventure from Bob Bates since his Infocom and Legend Entertainment days (Sherlock: The Riddle of the Crown Jewels, Arthur: The Quest for Excalibur, Eric the Unready, Timequest, and he co-authored many others.) A while ago he picked up TADS 3 and started work on a new game. It became clear however, that finishing and self-publishing a full-length commercial game is going to require funding. Just putting a *.t3 file somewhere was not going to cut it.

Thus the Kickstarter campaign.

This is not only good news for Interactive Fiction in general, but also for TADS specifically, as one of the Kickstarter goals is about making the game available on mobile platforms. So we'll be porting Multimedia TADS (aka "HTML TADS") to iOS as well as Android in order to make a mobile version of the game possible. A full Multimedia TADS port is pretty much required, as another Kickstarter goal is to raise funds for a game soundtrack by Chris Huelsbeck.

The ports are not going to be proprietary or locked down in any way. Bob has made it clear that the porting work can be contributed back to the community with no strings attached. I'll be doing the porting for the game, and obviously some of that work will be game-specific, but after that I'll be able to just re-use the relevant parts and adapt it for a general-purpose Multimedia TADS interpreter on mobile platforms. So if all goes well, that would mean QTads will be ported to mobile (finally!) This includes TADS 2 by the way, not just 3. There's a lot of TADS 2 games out there.
